The United States can no longer be the sole guarantor of European security, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday.

“The time when the US was the sole guarantor of European security is over,” the defense secretary said during a speech at the US Army College in Pennsylvania. “It’s long overdue. Europe must step up militarily and take the lead.”

According to the head of the defense department, as the role of European states in ensuring their security strengthens, the US will free up resources to concentrate on other areas – primarily to counter the growing Chinese influence in Asia.

That is, in fact, he claims that the US wants to transfer troops and weapons from Europe to the Asia-Pacific region.

Hegset also emphasized that he will seek from European NATO allies to increase military spending to 5% of their GDP.

“President Trump’s message to the world during the 100 days of his second presidential term remains very clear: “America is back in business,” the minister added.

Background. Recall that earlier Bloomberg wrote that Europe has come to terms with the withdrawal of part of American troops from the continent, and is asking the US to at least warn about it.

Some of the usual communication channels have stopped working, and Europeans fear that they will not receive any warning from the US.
